Intersurgical expands in Lithuania, plans to invest €10 million in advanced manufacturing

March 19, 2024

Intersurgical, an international medical devices manufacturer that has been operating in Lithuania for 30 years, is expanding its operations in Pabradė. The company plans to invest €10 million in a new manufacturing facility and equipment by the end of 2024.

The first phase of the expansion project has already commenced. By December 2024, a 2,500 sq. m. manufacturing facility with fully automated production lines will be built next to the existing 80,000 sq. m.  factory in Pabradė. The total investment in this phase will be €10 million, with additional investment of around €18 million over the next 3-4 years.

Over three decades in Lithuania, we have amassed invaluable experience and expertise when it comes to both technological solutions and process management. Our team's experience and high level of competence is the most important factor behind the company’s decision to expand the production of this specific medical equipment here in Pabradė.
Sigitas Žvirblis, CEO of Intersurgical Lithuania

According to Mr. Žvirblis, this step will help the company to expand the production capacity of its unique and innovative products and expand sales in other markets. Currently, products manufactured in Lithuania are exported to the US, Germany, the UK, France, Japan, Australia and other countries.

The Minister of the Economy and Innovation Aušrinė Armonaitė believes that the arrival and development of advanced industry in Lithuania’s regions can breathe new life into them.

It is crucial for Lithuania to expand and develop its regions, attracting new investors who create well-paying jobs and helping existing industry to transform into advanced manufacturing. Pabradė and Visaginas, where Intersurgical has become the largest employer, are good examples of how and in what direction regional cities can develop.

Elijus Čivilis, General Manager of Invest Lithuania, points out that the company’s innovative activities, research and high level of expertise in the country have allowed it to expand and develop specific products in Lithuania.

Lithuania is no longer a cheap labour country. Today, we compete not on price but on our innovative solutions, high technology and talent. The case of Intersurgical demonstrates that Lithuanian workers possess significant experience and competencies necessary for developing unique and highly complex products. On top of that, we need to further increase our productivity to remain one of the most attractive places for international businesses to expand their operations.

In recent years, Intersurgical has been optimising and rapidly automating production processes in Lithuania. All this requires raising the level of qualification of employees to ensure uninterrupted work on new production lines.

“We are introducing cutting-edge technology into our production, so we are investing a lot of time and resources in training our existing staff to use it. We conduct thousands of in-house refresher training sessions and courses annually. We also collaborate with vocational schools, whose graduates continue their career journeys with us. For our operations, it is crucial to have colleagues who live close to the factory,” says Mr. Žvirblis, CEO of Intersurgical Lithuania.

The Visaginas and Pabradė sites in Lithuania have a total of around 2,200 employees – more than half of Intersurgical’s global workforce. The international medical equipment manufacturer has 28 subsidiaries and 6 factories in different countries around the world. The Lithuanian unit accounts for more than half of the Group’s production. Intersurgical specialises in resuscitation and intensive care, anaesthesia, oxygen and aerosol therapy and airway care products.
