Biotech innovation from Lithuania driving solutions for sustainable agriculture
Nando is addressing one of agriculture’s major challenges – overfertilization, in particular the inefficient use of nitrogen and phosphate. Its science-based solutions help crops grow more effectively while reducing water pollution, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss, proving that productivity and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Working through partnerships and a global distributor network, the company brings both products and expertise directly to farmers. By making sustainable practices practical at scale, Nando is contributing to a more resilient global food system

Scaling agricultural solutions from Lithuania to the world
Nando was founded in Kaunas in 2007 by entrepreneurs who recognized the potential of using living microorganisms to bring new solutions to agriculture. Farmers were seeking more efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional agrochemicals, and Lithuania provided the right conditions to innovate. By 2009, the company had begun producing its own higher-value products – starting with surfactants for agriculture – setting the course for its growth from a small laboratory venture into an international agritech company.
Nando’s growth since then has been driven by Lithuania’s strong base of scientific talent. The country leads the EU in the share of STEM graduates, giving the company access to specialists in biotechnology and chemistry. From this pool, Nando has built a team of scientists and agronomists in Kaunas, while also encouraging future talent through scholarships at local universities. This combination of experienced professionals and young specialists has enabled the company to establish an advanced R&D center and steadily bring new products to market.
Infrastructure and a supportive business environment have further strengthened Nando’s development in Lithuania. A well-developed logistics network and a location that connects easily with European markets enable the company to reach its distributors efficiently. Just as important has been the national focus on life sciences and biotechnology, which are recognized as priority sectors and supported through incentives and funding for innovation. Through initiatives such as Norway Grants and EU structural funds, Nando has been able to upgrade its technologies and strengthen its international competitiveness.
From advanced production to sustainable farming: impact made in Lithuania
Nando’s growth is contributing to the development of Lithuania’s biotech sector and innovation ecosystem. A major step forward is the company’s €7 million investment in a new biotechnology factory in Jonava district – a project that will expand its production capacity and create new opportunities for innovation. It has also introduced the first automated fermentation line of its kind in the Baltics, further strengthening Lithuania’s position in advanced biotechnology. At the same time, Nando’s innovations are gaining international recognition and helping Lithuanian farmers adopt more sustainable practices – reducing fertilizer use and emissions in line with the country’s environmental goals.
