Expanding Maritime Industry Capacity: Western Shipyard Group Is Building a New Dock

October 26, 2026

Lithuania’s largest maritime engineering group is further expanding its ship repair capacity. The project by Western Shipyard Group (WSG), which is part of the Estonian-owned BLRT Grupp, includes the construction of a new floating dock and upgrades to related infrastructure, enabling the company to handle more and larger-scale orders in Klaipėda.

The fact that this investment is being implemented with state support sends an important signal to the entire maritime engineering industry: we can see that the sector receives institutional backing and that cooperation between business and the public sector can systematically strengthen Lithuania’s export potential. The new dock is currently under construction, and we plan to begin operating it next autumn.
Arnoldas Šileika, CEO of Western Shipyard Group

The new infrastructure will make it possible to service larger and more technically complex vessels, improve operational efficiency, and expand the scope of ship repair and modernisation services. Once the project is completed, the company expects to be able to repair at least 10% more vessels each year. More than 95% of ship repair and modernisation work carried out in Lithuania serves foreign markets, giving the investment significant export potential.

Lithuania has a strong foundation for developing its maritime engineering sector and further consolidating its position in international markets. This project demonstrates how cooperation between the state, institutions and business can strengthen the country’s export capacity, modernise industrial infrastructure and create additional value for the region. For Klaipėda, it means more opportunities, new jobs and an even stronger role for the port city in the international maritime engineering market.
Edvinas Grikšas, Minister of the Economy and Innovation

The project will help strengthen the engineering capabilities of the Klaipėda region. As ship repair capacity grows and the number of technically complex projects increases, demand for skilled specialists will also rise. In preparation, Western Shipyard Group is continuing to expand cooperation with academic partners and vocational education and training institutions, as well as its student scholarship programme. Local contractors are expected to carry out the work required to integrate the new infrastructure, helping to involve regional businesses and create value in the Klaipėda region.

It is important for Lithuania to create the conditions for growth for businesses that are already operating here, have built strong capabilities and can compete in international markets. The expansion of Western Shipyard Group in Klaipėda shows that such investments have a broader impact on the country: they strengthen exports, create new jobs and open up more opportunities for students and future specialists. At the same time, the project reinforces Klaipėda’s role as a regional centre for maritime engineering.
