In 2006, the Lithuanian port city of Klaipėda welcomed the Norwegian company Omega, which develops project management software primarily for oil and gas industries and the public sector. Since then, the local division has been growing its capacity and is currently looking to add around 20 skilled developers to the team.
The Klaipėda division – one of nineteen global locations Omega has – is solely focused on software development. Throughout the years it has gained expertise to tailor solutions for global customers such as Equinor, BP, Maersk Oil, Shell and others. The team, currently numbering 25, is well-versed in platforms such as .NET, Microsoft SQL Server and modern web tools. Lithuanian specialists are closely involved in developing the company’s flagship product – the Pims project-support suite.
“We are glad to have selected Klaipėda as one of our global office locations in 2006. Having witnessed Klaipėda’s and Lithuania’s impressive growth in the last 13 years, I am confident in saying that the constantly evolving IT talent pool has justified our choice and has exceeded our initial expectations,” states Svein Tore Haraldseid, General Manager at Omega Pims Software.
“Omega’s slogan Big enough to deliver – small enough to care truly encompasses the way we operate globally. We provide our services to multibillion-dollar companies, while encouraging openness towards colleagues and new ideas to enable growth and development. Our office in Klaipėda is a good example of this positive, open and engaged culture.”
All of Omega’s employees in Klaipėda are entitled to exclusive benefits they get by collecting and spending advantage points. The points can be exchanged for vacation and teambuilding activities in places such as Bergamo, Copenhagen and the Faroe Islands. Moreover, Omega participates in various social initiatives, innovative research programs and provides scholarships and internship opportunities to students from Klaipėda’s University and other colleges.
“As the business services sector is developing rapidly in Vilnius and Kaunas, some investors are already discovering Klaipėda. Omega’s success story and growth shows great potential for the port city to become one of the centers of this industry in Lithuania. However, in order to turn the attention from investors into the creation of new, well-paying jobs, Klaipėda should promptly emphasize the development of the specialist pool, ensure that currently operating higher education facilities in the region prepare more IT, finance and other types of specialists required for business service industry,” states Virginijus Sinkevičius, Lithuania’s Minister of Economy.
“Klaipėda’s economy has traditionally been focused on the sea, and companies like Omega help to diversify it and create jobs for skilled software developers. A track record of more than ten years and expansion plans show that the company is committed to helping Klaipėda become a strong IT hub in the region,” Mantas Katinas, Managing Director of Invest Lithuania, says.
Omega was initially established in 1986 as a computer sales company in Norway, developing hardware solutions by then state-of-the-art Atari system. Since 1991, it rebranded as Omega and started focusing on software. To this day, over 1300 employees are working in offices located in 10 different countries and on customer premises all around the world, providing services to clients such as Maersk, Chevron and Oslo Municipality.
“We are glad Omega has chosen to further solidify its position in Klaipėda. In 2018 key city stakeholders made a strategic decision in the next 12 years to work on strengthening the service sector by implementing measures oriented towards attracting more top-tier talent. We are ready to support Omega and other shared service centers looking to expand or establish their presence in Klaipėda,” says Simas Simanauskas, director of Klaipėda city development agency Klaipėda ID.
