AmerisourceBergen to Establish New Office in Vilnius, Bolster Global Footprint

August 05, 2019

AmerisourceBergen, a global healthcare solutions and commercialization leader, has announced plans to expand operations in Vilnius, where it already has a team and facility dedicated to specialty logistics through World Courier. AmerisourceBergen’s new office, which will open in January of 2020, will have responsibilities for a wide range of functions, including Finance, Treasury and Accounting, Digital Business Solutions, Customer Care, and Human Resources.

As a pharmaceutical wholesale distributor, AmerisourceBergen provides healthcare products, value-driving services and business solutions that improve access to care. Its Lithuania office will offer essential support across the expansive portfolio of AmerisourceBergen businesses. The company intends to recruit 200 positions in this location and invest up to 30 million euros over the next five years.

“AmerisourceBergen is always evaluating ways to maximize our impact, fuel growth, move markets and enable access to care for millions of people each day. Expanding our global footprint is a big piece of that work,” said Doug Cook, President of Commercialization Services & Animal Health at AmerisourceBergen. “We’ve had the opportunity to witness the local talent, infrastructure and accessibility of Vilnius through World Courier. With Invest Lithuania, the Ministry of Economy and other local institutions ready to help us, building an office there felt like a logical next step. At AmerisourceBergen, our company purpose is to create healthier futures. We look forward to building a team in Vilnius that is inspired by this purpose and will help us continue to shape healthcare delivery worldwide.”

This expansion for AmerisourceBergen comes less than a year after World Courier successfully opened its transport facility. AmerisourceBergen, which was just ranked 10TH on the Fortune 500 list, will be located in the new Quadrum facility in the center of Vilnius at Konstitucijos Ave. 21.

Vilnius has been named one of the best locations for shared services and outsourcing for five years in a row by the annual Shared Services and Outsourcing Awards. Vilnius is the destination of choice for major companies such as Western Union, Nasdaq, Booking.com, Cognizant, IBM, and Moody’s. These companies have been lured by the city’s IT and infrastructure, favourable business environment and the ‘can-do’ attitude of local and national government.

Talent is another key factor bringing foreign investors to the city. Lithuania’s population leads the EU for higher education levels, and 80% of young people speak English – with over half of all Lithuanians speaking two or more foreign languages. As the country’s largest city, Vilnius is home to most of that talent. It’s a young city too, with almost 60% of its population in the 20-59 age group – a key factor in its growing reputation as a dynamic regional hub.

Welcoming AmerisourceBergen’s announcement, Lithuania’s Minister of Economy and Innovation Virginijus Sinkevičius said:

“In the past several months two of the top ten largest US companies decided to move their shared services to Lithuania. We are especially happy about AmerisourceBergen’s decision to expand their global business services centres in Lithuania. One could not wish for a better endorsement of Lithuania’s investment environment that sees increasingly more attention from US enterprises. In the nearest future, we will put more effort to turn this attention into even more investment projects in Lithuania.”

Echoing the minister, Mantas Katinas, Director General of the Foreign Investment Promotion Agency Invest Lithuania, paid tribute to the country’s GBS sector:

“AmerisourceBergen’s decision to open a new office in Vilnius demonstrates the vibrancy of Lithuania’s Global Business Services sector, and the strength of the country’s investment climate. US companies represent the single biggest employer in Lithuania’s global business services sector, and AmerisourceBergen is set to take that to the next level. Healthcare services are a huge and growing part of the global economy – and with the arrival of AmerisourceBergen, Lithuania will be right at the heart of that success.”
